Carpintis/Black Convict

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what i find odd is the fact your convict has long fins just like all male convicts, ive got a breeding pair of convicts and while the female normally has the orange spot on her side when she's in breeding dress, she DOES NOT have long flowing anal fins, the male does however.

any chance you have the two sex's on them reversed?

I feel that the Carpintus is female. Look at the breeding dress.

The Convict might possibly be male I guess....
I could have sworn it laid eggs a few years back!? Your right about the fins though. They are pretty long for it to be a female. I mean, one of them HAS to be a male, right?! I cant have a same sex pair....

I wonder if i keep the fry, and grow them out to full length, how much I could get for them...? hmmmmm.....

Fins are misleading sometimes, if it has orange on the belly 99% of the time the convict is female, I've got some pink convictxcarpintis hybrids, I forgot to turn the heater on one day about 2 months ago and all but 3 survived. They were going to be fed to my bigger SA/CA's but I figured they had been through hell and back no heater for 3 days at only about a week after being free swimmin, dang convicts its almost impossible to kill them, accidentally or on purpose.

probably both female then, the fins threw me to male on the convict, but looking at the head shape on your con, its more female shapped, who knows, right now i dont see orange on her belly, but that doesnt mean much right now.

goto all the local pet stores and see if you can find a breeding male of some sort, a con or anything else will do, my convicts are nice looking with blue finned tails and dorsal spines, as well as yellow on their bottoms they reproduce every 5-6 weeks

who knows how inbred they are.

I've always noticed my convict females to color up that orange before finding a mate, when they find a mate and are about to spawn the orange really comes out, but after eggs have been layed or there is no male in the tank to possibly spawn with the orange will also fade away. I think your black con is a female, my pink convict as very nice long flowing trailers that would make you think male soley on the dorsal fin, but I've seen her lay eggs with my own eyes, so I know she is female hope this helps you out.
