An ly is an alewive, which is a herring like baitfish. They call them lys in the panhandle of florida though.

i cast net for bait as well. Shad, chubs, suckers, etc...
FYI it is illegal to keep game fish that are caught in a net NOT illegal to net them. No one has control of whats under the net when they throw it

Every once in awhile i get something exciting, this bass was 5lb 6oz and 20 inches. The mirror carp was the first one i had ever seen on this river, he was 5 or 6 lbs. I mostly net for bluegills/shad. I get the occasional carp, crappie, perch, or bass though.
You can't really control what you catch, what I meant is that you can't take gamefish that you catch with a net. Laws are different everywhere, I would just read up on your area.

The bass was caught in a 10ft radius net, which i ruined on some rocks. I now use a 6ft radius net.
