cat for 75gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
things are getting to be repetitive. everyone asks a question regarding stocking and the answer almost always seems to be " nope too small of a tank, you'll be over stocked. nobody has asked what my water parameters are currently or my waterchange schedule. as well as what filtration I have.which is 2 ac110s and a sun sun canister. I change my water every 3 days regardless of nitrates. and I test ammonia daily. so instead of giving me run on the mill answered about how I should own a pond because I have an Oscars how about you guys try and actually answer the question being asked.

? IMHO the answers fit the question, which was quite curt:

looking for a nice size catfish to go with my oscar. it'll be a bare bottom tank. so I'll need to have something that doesn't need a substrate.

Sorry we didn't ask the "right" questions. There too many inquiries like yours around and little motivation for us to start digging or typing up a lecture on a dozen of different catfish or more that may fit your criteria that you may not like at all or can't afford / find.

Have you heard of GIGO rule? Garbage in, garbage out. Or the answer can be only as good as the question.

Have you filtered the Cat-eLog and come up with a list of candidates? I think we need to get specific here. But I'd also listen to the guys and consider that when your oscar gets to 12"-16", the bioload will be huge and your current filters will barely keep up. Oscars are messy feeders.

+1

4-6 pimelodus pictus. Yes the oscar will get big enough to get them in his mouth but I think with a little decor and their speed I don't think it would be all that dangerous.

Pros:
They like similar water conditions
They will help keep the tank clear of uneaten food from said messy Oscar
Always busy, hardly ever still
Shiny!

Cons:
May stay a little too small to be 100% safe

You could always add a small tunnel or pipe or two for them to hide in.

As long as you're on top of your water conditions you should be good.

however if the oscar were to eat on the pictus cats, the oscar would probably die as well due to the spines. I don't think its a risk worth taking, but we'll see what the OP thinks
not to mention the added bioload
