OK I currently have a 72 gal bow front with nothing in it. Im thinking about purchasing a black banded cat shark or a marbled bamboo cat shark, but this tank would only be temporary. When it gets bigger I will either buy a large tank or donate it to my local lfs that would keep him in a very large aquarium. Does that seem like a good or bad idea?

bad

well depends really.
if you REALLY want a shark, i don't think getting a brownbanded bamboo egg and hatching, raising it in there for a couple months is too much of a bad idea.
you have to understand you'll get upgrading pretty soon though.
this is also assuming you'll have perfect water quality.

do you know where I would be able to purchase a banded cat shark egg?

And what are the chances that its going to hatch?

yeah, like eveyone said, this is a HORRIBLE idea.

DO NOT BUY ONE UNLESS YOU HAVE AT LEAST A 500 GALLON TANK. A 72 gallon tank would only house it for about 3 months.

Also, the first few months of raising a shark can be very hard and expensive. In addition to this, the water quality has to be PRISTENE.

i would say 500, more like 300, but bigger is definately better. yeah you'd only get a few months out it, and sharks are too much trouble to keep IMHO

Yeah, Definatly a Bad Idea
I have my pair in a 1,000g FOWLR Type System
A 72inch tank would last about 1-2 months and would not be worth it for you to buy it,
and then just give it away or worse KILL IT

Ive already contacted my lfs they said that they will sell me an egg and once it out grows the tank i can just give it to them.
