Cats and dogs shed. It's a fact of life, there is no way to stop it. Some breeds shed less than others but they all shed.
That being said, unhealthy skin and coat will cause more shedding. And the main cause of unhealthy skin and coat is crappy food. If he is feeding any grocery store brand food (friskies, meow mix etc.) then he's pretty much feeding filler crap that is just enough to keep the cat alive but FAR from healthy.
Moving up to a healthier food, even an intermediate like science diet or natural choice will help a lot. Moving up to a premium natural healthy food like Wellness, Blue Buffalo, Natural Balance etc. will work wonders for everything, not just the shedding. I feed Solid Gold personally. The two cats I have now have been on that as long as I have had them however when I first made the switch to a high quality natural food with my kitty back in Florida the difference was noticeably within a few weeks. I went from whatever was cheapest at the grocery store at the time to Wellness weight control formula (kitty was a fat little thing) within 2 weeks he was noticeably softer and shedding A LOT less. In just a couple months he was down to a healthy weight and even more playful and active.
I know a lot of people are reluctant to make the switch because of the prices of some of the better foods, and a lot of people give me that bull**** about how their pet has lived off ol' roy or some **** for ever without any problems! (except the shedding, and itching, and obesity, and variety of other problems which of course have nothing to do with the food!)
But really... if you care anything for your animals... it is worth it. And when you can see the difference it makes in that short a time span it really emphasizes that it IS better! Just like when people switch from fast food every day to a healthy diet.... it makes a difference, and it's a good one.
