catalina vs hagen HO T5's?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have the hagen single 48" fixture and it's not all that bad. I can't imagine what was going through their minds when they were coming up with the mounting system, but other than that the light comes on when I need it and it goes off when I want it to. Which is all a light is needed for.

timer purposes I would guess. or maybe too cheap to install a $2 switch.

$1 switch, plus $25,000 UL listing approval... or just include a time with a switch that is already on it... cheaper way was ditch the switch on the light, and include the timer for free.

Catalina is a cheaply made product. In my experience, the Hagen light fixtures are very good. There are better units out there though.

sorry, i gotta disagree. ive used and owned both. ill take Catalina any day. granted, Catalina is no TEK fixture, but it's really good for the money

Woot Wylds back :headbang2 and it seems like the catalina is the best option for sure, especially from what ive heard of their customer service. I actually have a 48" 4 bulb t5HO tek light fixture that im not even using its a shame

Nothing compares to a TEK. I've run both, and do not like the catalina.

The hagen fixtures have one reflector for both bulbs, so they're probably somewhat less efficient.

Has anyone used a PAR meter to test the difference between different brands?

That would be an expensive experiment, but I'd love for somebody to do it...

So right mate. I can say on Hagen's behalf that their single light fixtures are made solid and run cool to the touch and with only one light bulb the reflector works like a charm. But like you said there are better lights out there by far.

FWIW, the Hagen that I boughly last month seems to be fine so far . . . plants doing fine, fish seem to like it better, in that they are out more often . . . bought this one because I needed a light, and the price seemed right . . .
