Catch locations

If you want the real deal get it yourself, I know that's not the most practical, most if not all dealers buy from others that say they have a fish from a certain location.....I take them with a grain of salt

I think LFS just ignore scientific names when ordering stock, but I would avoid stores like that.

Not always the pet store's fault. Having worked in one, I know one of the largest, local wholesalers doesn't use scientific names, only common names.

I've been looking into doing that recently. For the fish I like, it's not that simple. Central America is a dangerous place. I don't speak the language. Lots of Central American countries won't just issue a permit to bring fish back. So, you're an American bringing back wildlife in your luggage from a Central American country? You're shipping back a big styrofoam box from there to the US, no permit, no paperwork? Explain to me how I could make that work? Cause I'd really like to just go down to Southern Mexico and grab some wild Argentea/Zonatus. Maybe some nice Syns or Melanurus? I'd really like to bring back a bunch a Herichthys. That'd be great!

Or you go fly down there, you spend....what 2 weeks in the jungle......and never catch or see any of the species you're looking for.

Or you go down there and get sick. My aunt and uncle had digestive problems till the day died from a bug they picked up in the water down there in the 60's. I spent a month in Indonesia for work back in the 90's and I had a fever every day I was there.

It takes experience, YEARS of experience, to go down to Central America and collect. I don't have it, don't have the time or money to acquire it over the next 5 years. If I had some connection to the area, spoke the language, then I'd do it. But, I don't.

New world collects regularly, I've seen photos of his fish, and met him a few times, you may want to Pm him for info. Here in most of Panama, water is safe to drink, but I must admit, most of the time its coffee and beer for me, and was the same in Mexico. The language barrier can be problematic, but not insurmountable. When I was in Viet Nam, parasitic water bourne illness was a regular thing.
I haven't collected here in Panama yet, because simply getting an aquarium thats large enough to keep anything worthwhile in, and then getting it to my island is quite the feat. It is my goal though. Pools or water troughs may be easier than aquariums.
I have a number of species I want to collect.
Tomocichla asfraci, Geophagis crassilabrus, Isthmoheros tuyrense, and any of the Cribroheros or Darienheros genus, but all in good time.
There ae diseases here that are a bit worrisome, especially in the Darien. Malaria, Chiccengunga, Dengue to name just a few. And then in Lake Gatun there are the crocs.
I've already been nicked by a stingray, but hey, its the journey, and in it, there are always risks, can't believe I made it this far.

it is just that simple....pm me, I've collected in every country of mainland Central America except for Panama, Duane I can't wait to see some real Panama fish....
