Ok, Ive been trying to keep crappie in my tank and so far have been rather unsucessful. Ive got one thats doing great but Ive had 4 die on me. The ones that died all had fin rot or some other infection that I could not cure. Do you guys put something in the water you keep your fish in? Like something to reduce stress.

how often do u do water changes
how are your nitrates
how does your water compare to where they were collected

i feel all fish should be quarantined and wormed and treated on an as needed basis after that.

Well, the fish are not dying after a prolonged period of time. The fish seem to get fin rot the day after i put them in the tank then they look even worse the next day and finally that night or the next morning. I actually cured ones fin rot but it stressed out a lot and died.

good question i use this for my betta take them out of the water wet a paper towel and got with the fin a couple of times. When you take a fish from its natural environment and put it into something smaller it stresses them alot. But anyways what i did for my bass wa i use 80% lake water and 20% clean water.Has your tank cycled? Test the lakes water then test your try to make them as close as possible! How are you catching them? Hook? If so then bend the BARB in so in look like a J. It will cause less damage to the fishes mouth.

Yea my tank has cycled. Its actually been running for quite a while. Ive had tropicals in it but Im changing it to a natural tank. The water is changed often too. Matching the water conditions in my tank to the lakes will be very difficult. I would rather not change them to the same as the lakes considering there has been an algie bloom in the lake.

an algea bloom is caused by the sun and you can easily take care of a bloom in ur tank. use salts and keep trhe light off, also use melafix, im getting some tomorrow for my channel cat.

no i dont have one in my tank. he said to match my tank conditions to the lakes so that would mean i would have to create an algie bloom in my tank to truely match the conditions and im not planning on doing that. I understand wut causes algie blooms and the conditions in the lake. Im an avid fisherman and know this lake well and dont want to be changing my tanks conditions because they will not be optimal for the pickerel I plan on putting in.

i think what he meant is to change all levels of PH, nitrites, nitrates ect. to match the lake so theres no shock to the fish at all, then gradually (in a couple waterchanges) make it to your specs. you dont need an algea bloom, and i meant if you get an algea bloom its easily fixable.

but i would try adding salts and try melafix if or when they get fin rot.

Well you have a problem and the only way to solve it is to change something. Or as i stated get 80%lake water 20% "clean water" Then slowly do water changes, or try to match them. You are either stressing your fish out way to much or they cant to the shock in water difference.Test the lake water and your water see what the difference is. post it.
