Catching Fish in a LArge Tank --Tips

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Seems like a lot of work, especially if a water change is not needed...you guys ever try using a clear plastic bag? Or a Plexi/acrylic glass to section off the tank? Or even better, try using a rod and hook. Never a better time to pan fish. Imagine using an ultra light pole with a 1lbs test line. Would feel like catching a shark.

Do it at night when the tank has been dark for a few hours. Walk up net in hand, flip on light and net while fish is sleeping

Probably the easiest way to catch a fish. Or throw food in wait for them to come to the top, and scoop them up. I have done that many times and never missed

I get 2 big nets and use one to corner the fish. Then I sneak the other net behind him and scoop him up.

Some fish are hella fast though so what I do is get one of the acrylic lids from the top of my tank and use it as a wall. Then I get the nets and scoop him up like that.

I have a 225 tank thats 3 feet wide and I use one of those 20 long mesh lids for aquariums to gather all the fish into one part of the tank and then swipe away. It's not about how large the area is, its about making that area the fish can use smaller and bam, easiest catch of my life.

I drain the tank down to 1/2 then I use a cut piece of plexiglass that is taller then the water is deep and wider then the tank so it has to remain at an angle and then slowly move the fish to one side. I can empty my 300 in about 30 to 45 minutes this way.

Heck that tank would be easy to catch fish in. With my 600 I have found that the only thing I can do to catch fish is to put in a divider and move it from one side to the other to corner the fish then net it.

You all really have to drain your water down? Lol just get a couple nets and corner them its really not that hard. Especially if its like an Oscar or something I caught mine in 1 min when I sold it....

Try it in an 8' long 30" deep tank and you'll appreciate a little less water in the there. A lot less stressful and aster changes are usually a good thing anyways. I always schedule moving fish around them.

Don't forget the hood and the three top braces to go around! I have the same dimensions and catching 10 bristlenose plecos was the fishing challenge of my life. I shoulda just let them become feeders.
