I been thinking, people can eat fish immediately after they have been caught, without quarantine, and we dont really get sick, people have eat raw fish straight from a river and ocean, just scale them, gut them, chop them properly and eat them. but we don't worry about catching internal parasites and getting bloat or anything like that.

if i catch the fish and freeze them, could i feed my preds with them the next day? no quarantine involved? we feed ourselves this way all the time.

I've fed raw, frozen salmon and shrimp to everything from discus to aros will no ill effects, so it's probably fairly safe.

Any fish i catch from the river i just go ahead and give them to my fish. If you trust the body of water you're getting them from, it should be fine to just feed them right away.

:confused::confused::screwy::screwy::screwy:its completely different we dont get ick or anything and the people who do eat it can get tape worms etc. just because we dont worry about it that doesnt mean you cant get it its a risk for you and your fish....

It is completely different, but still it should be no issue.

Fish eat fish in the wild. Do they catch them and quarantine them before they eat them? Of course not.

I'm sure the fish have some relatively strong digestive systems and immunities built up against the parasites as they would be eating them in the wild...

It's obviously a risk, but so is feeding any feeder.

I agree. I have to point out that there are always risks when you introduce organic items from other bodies of water, which you had implied. With that said, I would do the same thing.

True, but a lot of our fish are "domesticated".

Very true, but i wouldn't think they would lose these abilities after a couple generations in aquaria. But maybe after a good while they would.

That's a good point. Like i said, there are definitely risks. Feeding your fish anything has it's risks though. Especially any type of feeders that you don't breed yourself.

The best treatment for feeder fish (other than gamma irradiating them (which kills the fish and any parasites (http://www.reviss.com/resource/lvl3.asp?lvl3_id=26 ))) is a salt bath. Recommended doses for aquarium fish are ½ to ¾ ounce of salt to 20 gallons of water to even a 1/2 cup salt to 1 gallon of water (for a quick couple of minutes bath). More info at:
