Thinking of doing a pair of bluegill and a brown bullhead catfish in my 75 gallon, I plan on making it like their natural habitat so LOTS of wood and some big plants including duckweed on top. would this work?
I think it will work for a long time, for years maybe even 5+ years. Our brown bullheads at 5 years were still at 13". In 5 years you will undoubtedy have tanks in the thousands of gallons. I believe in you
About the photo's, the bluegill shown appears to be a Florida Coppernose bluegill, native to Fla. but introduced to many lakes in the Midwest as well. They grow larger than the more common varieties found almost everywhere. In most places a common bluegill will rarely get beyond 7" or so. The catfish shown looks to be a male channel cat. As Viktor suggests it could possibly be a white cat but hard to tell at that size as white cats never have the typical spots found on young channel cats that will lose their spots as they mature. Mature white cats tend to be more grayish than brownish but coloration isn't often a reliable indication of species among so many cat varieties. My experience with bullheads are the black variety and rarely have seen one beyond the 12' mark. Aside from bluegills there a many varieties of sunfish that could work, green sunfish make nice pets, a little more aggressive than bluegills but otherwise o.k. There are many colorful sunfish such as pumpkinseeds for example and the warmouth is interesting too. There are vendors such as Jonah's Aquarium that can supply many varieties of sunfish, bullheads and madtoms and other native species as well. There is a forum on here for coldwater and native species, so you may want to check that out. Possibly you just may want to keep fish you've caught locally at your pond and lake, did that many times as a kid myself. Can't do that anymore here in Cali anyway, illegal to transport any sport caught fish alive, period, same's true elsewhere. Too many 'bucket biologists' screwed it up for us responsible types...
Yellowcatthebiggerthebetter thanks for clarifying those for me I searched for big bgs and bullheads and these came up I felt that was massive for a bullhead
