Catfish and salt

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I generally use 1 tbls. per 10 gallons (or a LITTLE less ,for tanks w/cats)no ill effects that I can see.... all but one of my cats are raphy's(armored), so they might not be best example but even my synodontis seems ok w/small doses....

LOL I have used salt with all kinds of loaches too.

The iodine is not the issue. Yellow prussiate of soda, however, is but this is indicated in the label and something you should avoid. I've always used iodized table salt with no issues.

+1

As already advised, kindly dissolve the salt before you add to tank. Salt does burn their skin when they graze around the bottom, hence, dissolution is important in this case.

I think this issue i based on personal perception of how their fish reacts to adding salt but I will say this if you add salt to a wound it is going to burn but that means it is healing I personally have had no ill effects using salt with my cats just be carefully not to overdose and I would not suggest using pimafix or melafix as it could disturb the bio balance in the tank and create a spike in nitrite nitrate or amonia

I disagree. It means that the tissue/nerve endings are irritated.

This appears mostly about koi, albeit the claims are generalized to ALL f/w fish, and appears an extreme (and rude?) point of view from DR. BRIAN G. AUKES; PhD (there may or may not be an insentive to sell, so reader beware) but I thought I'd link it here anyway: http://www.tropicalfishmeds.com/

I can only guess he refers to Dr. Johnson of koivet.com who appears a reputable fish vet who many refer.

What a ridiculous link. Nothing aside from one man's opinion with no actual points to back up his claims. Or at least that's what I got when reading the link. Salt is perfectly safe at the recommended doses for treating fish. Should be used only when treating the fish, not always added as is the practice with some koi/fish owners.
