If you have enough hiding spots the con can't access, a SA bumblebee cat might be an option as well
With cons, forget the catfish and anything else IMO. Even if a fish is "armored", it still does not mean the fish is immune to attacks. They will eventually suffer damage which can lead to secondary infections thus killing them in the process.
Any catfish that you put in there will either take some damage... or will cause more damage than you think... Why exactly are you looking to add a Cat in with the Cons?

yeah i was definately just looking at the fit of the cat in the 30. Its been a long time since i was into cichlids. A breeding pair of cons is not got like much of anything in a 30 gallon. Nothing will be safe.
Plus as bass pointed out cats love to make food out of other's children.
So just a breeding pair of cons would be the way to go.

. Convict problem no more.You mentioned the plural form "convicts". I'd simply forget putting anything with the cons like I said earlier. They do not need attention to breed immediately and by the time they spawn, that's the time you will find yourself dealing with the mess.
