yes, as someone mentioned, earthworms....they LOVE those lil worms!! We always plop the leftover worms from fishing in the tank too...after rinsing off of course
It is sooo much cheaper to buy the shrimp for human consumption. I get the small shrimp (big bag for $14), and the big jumbo fish that I feed the 2' catfish.
As for water changes, it really depends upon the stock of your tank and filtration
