i have cory catfish and for the last couple of months i have had 2 different females lay eggs, the eggs are yellowish in color. how do i know if they are fertilized. Do i leave the parents in with the eggs. How can i tell if i have a male. The last time she was laying eggs, she was pushing on another catfish's side and the other catfish was doing this vibrating thing then the female would swim away, sometimes the other catfish would chase the female that was laying eggs. this is really my first time with egglayers so i am not aware of any signs or what to do. does anyone have experience with these catfish. i am not sure where else to look to get the information.

thank you

hi there, i have cory cats too and their eggs are white when laid. The female actually sucks the sperm from the male hence the 'T' shape they form. Then the female finds a suitable, generally flat place to lay the eggs. Usually on the glass. As my tank is a community parasdise, the guppies are straight in there eating the eggs. If youve got nothing else in there it may be ok to leave the parents.... dont quote me tho. The eggs i think hatch in 24-48 hrs?? I scraped some off the glass and put in a floating container in the tank, added meth blue to stop the fungus and watched. They hatched and after about 2-3 days they were all squiggling around. I fed them on insofuria for 3 days then egg yolk for a couple days then unfortunatley the container was on its side the next day. So far i havent seen them. But they were only 2mm at the most?? Good luck with yours :)

is there any way to tell if they are actually fertilized because i have seen them sit on the glass for as much as a week and they never hatch, since i have no experience with them. im not even sure i have a male, the female was doing that to another catfish with the "t" thing but how do i know if it is a male

the female is very noticibly larger. ive had mine about 6 months now and they only started breeding after i got them alone in their 10 gal. but anyway, all eggs start out the same color in my experience. fertilized ones start to develop and you can see the color of the fish becoming prominant inside the egg. i have peppered corys so it may be different with all but thats my experience. usually take a bit longer than 24-48 but a week? no go there. 3-5 days usually. and i dont think they will try to mate female to female so you probably have a male. good luck.

thanks for the replies, i just don't get why mine don't hatch then, because the have been yellowish in color. what temperature of the water do you keep yours at when you have eggs, im just trying to figure out if im doing something wrong
