1st: RTCxNiger hybrid
2nd: TSNxNiger hybrid
Didn't know there was a surviving member of RTCxNiger. Looks the same size as my current one, 8". Probably from the same batch. Looks like mine aren't last of his kind

nice. How big is it? They look similar to juvenile O. niger, the only difference is that niger have larger spiky scales running on their lateral line.

AFAIK, which is not that far, it is the catfish trait that they have no scales. I am not aware of any catfish having any scales. It could be my ignorance.
I don't know what to call it. But you can literally pull it off from the skin like scales. I tested on my previous O. niger like scrape that scales a bit. It doesn't come off, i wouldn't hurt my fish, just intrigue about it but yes, they are like scales.
I'm guessing they are more like Torpedo Scad or a Tuna lateral scales, those are sharp. Some carp are scaleless, only have scales on the lateral lines.
They are bony scutes.

I think it is a matter of principle that catfish have no scales.
