catfish ID help please?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He is currently in my 180 along with 3 other tank mates:

8" Silver Arowana
9" Silver Arowana
8" Florida Gar

The plans are to have them into a 400 gallon by September/October.

You have a lot of time before you'll need a 400 gallon, so don't feel rushed. Any more pictures?

My old setup:

Now it has been stripped bare to prevent damage to the aros:

I can upload some more of the entire tank, I just snapped these the other day to show the individual fishies.

:D

Nice-looking guy. Most likely either a Sorubim lima (grows to 2 feet) or Sorubim elongatus (will grow to only a foot). They are very hard to tell apart.

Here is a sister thread. If you'd like, see my comments and visit the links provided on the 3rd page. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...atfish-thread-and-updates&highlight=elongatus

Headstanding is perfectly natural: this is how they pretend to be a floating stick in the wild to let unsuspecting prey get close.

He is about 10", scored him for 11.99 at Big Al's. Good deal?

lol, I bought him some of this to eat:

Question:

I find him swimming around quite a bit, but I also find him in a peculiar position often as well. He is facing STRAIGHT down, facing the bottom of the tank, pretty much perpendicular to my intake hose on my Ehiem filter. He will sit like that for what seems hours, and then start swimming around looking for food and then be "normal" and then go back to being completely upright. What is going on?

That's a good deal! As for behavior, it's pretty normal for them to do head stands especially if they don't have any hiding spots. Is you tank completely bare? If you add a few rocks and driftwood, it might feel more comfortable.

They are spectacular and do the best in groups of least 5-6 in terms of comfort and other behavior.
