It sounds to me like it is a hoplo catfish they can be very chubby and are brown with black speckles. If it is i can reccomend them to anyone.

nope ive seen hoplos
it was too wide to be a hoplo, had a conventional mouth, and no armor
think rtc body form but a little shorter and wider
