I cant say from experience and honestly I don't really know, but I asked a question just like this for my 55g not that long ago.
I was told that Synodontis or Pictus are your best options. Someone also suggested Striped Raphael Catfish, I think this is the one I am going to investigate a little further after I move in a month or so. Whatever you end up getting I would love to hear about it because I do plan on getting a catfish once I move in June.

depending on the amount of activity you wish out of your catfish there are tons of readily available species that can stay in 55 gal for life. Cories, synos, many different plecos, striped and spotted rapheals as mentioned already, If you are looking for something unique you can go with frog mouths, but not sure you'll get any activity except during feeding time.
i say go with some synodontis. they have awesome colors and arent too shy. i have decorus and petricola and i love them
