Catfish recommendations for 48 * 12 tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would go with a hoplo cat. I have one in my ninety with two bichirs and various other fish. They get along fine and the hoplo is always the first to recognize food in the water. He should be fine with the jack as long as the dempsy doesn't get too big and the hoplo to small. They have armor like bodies and should be ok

Yellow Bullhead, or a stonecat Noturus flavus they get 12inches long and can live 7yrs they are only semi-aggressive but can defend themselves against cichlids of the same or smaller size.....and they love driftwood (which IMHO looks good in any tank).

The stonecat would be ok, but might stress if the water is too warm. The yellow bullhead will get way too large for this set up. I caught one at 8" and after a year it was over 14". finally went into the pond with bigger catfish, and held it's own for about 6 months before being eaten by the 28" channel catfish in the pond. bullhead is an awesome fish able to hold it's own, but another consideration is in a small tank they become aggressive easily. Extremely territorial.

I have a 7" raphael that is close to 5 years old and holds his own with a 12" suncat, 10" suncat, and 10" ID shark. He's the first one to the food when I drop it in. Eats cichlid pellets off the top till he looks like a spiny golf ball. :)

good point I hadnt thought about the stonecat tank temps....(mine lived in a tank whose temps fluctuated with the seasons inbetween 65 degrees f. and 80 degrees f.) with constantly high temps that might affect theyre health.
