Catfish suggestion ?

I want a brave catfish that maxes out around 6-7 inches. It will be with several small South American cichlids and a African black knife fish in a 55

A larger synodontis species may be considered. Or a Pimelodus species. Smaller Doradidae too.

Agreed on the Synodontis option as most of them that I know of are showy and active.I would veer away from most nocturnal cats as they will hide most of the time and you will hardly ever see them.

I've considered these, there are two subspecies correct which one do I get? And are they active?

Yes there are hundreds of them but not all that many of them are readily available in the hobby.Look into S.eupterus.
