Catfish suggestions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lima shovelnose are great cats and mine stayed out all the time

Such a beautiful fish. My concern would be the dither fish in the tank. I may need to reconsider my choices regarding the dithers. It seems like most of the catfish suggested that I would love to try would make short work of the Columbians.

Yes catfish have big mounths and may be a risk at night when they are active

Plecs and whiptails would work, giraffe cat (biscutatus), false giraffe (although tend to hide a lot), hoplos as mentioned are tough, some or many synodontis.

I might think of looking slightly larger than Colombian tetra even without the predatory type cat, maybe Congo tetras or even medium barbs such as filaments or similar.

I'm starting to think you may be right. My knowledge of Tetras is rather limited, and I think it might do me some good to study up and put a little more thought into what dithers to use as I'd really like to add a decent size Catfish. Someone else mentioned to me the other day that some of the smaller growing species from the silver dollar family might be an option for a dither school in a tank of that size? That's another family of fish I have little to no experience with so I'll have to look into that as well.

My candidates were chosen with the likely probability that tetras would be left alone.

Same with Dave's.

Limas will enjoy expensive live meals.

I've been reading up on the suggestions you guys made. That Harlequin is stunning! I've never seen it before. I'm also eying a feathering synodontis per your suggestion. Good size and very unique looking. I've kept smaller synodontis but none of the larger.
