I have a Stripped Raphael Catfish, and he is always in the driftwood and out of sight except at night, and I was wondering if their are other breeds of catfish that aren't nocturnal or what type of lighting would best be used for night viewing

It seems most fish can't perceive red. Get a darkroom red sleeve for your flourescent light or a red darkroom bulb for screw-in setups to watch your fish. My shy polys come out and seem relaxed under the darkroom light. Of course, you can only use the red lights in a dark or dim room.

dang i'm color blind to red ;)

Howdy,

I installed a dimmer. Not an easy task for fluorescent light bulbs, that's why I just hooked it up to a regular bulb. Turn it way down, and once all lights are out (incl the room lights), and your eyes got used to it, you'll see how active your tank really is..

how big is your striped? mine is almost 6 inches, have had him over two years... mine comes out when i put food in the tank, i check him out then to make sure things are cool. after, he goes right back in his "cave"... i just enjoy this guy as is...

anyhow, the red light idea is the way to go if ya want to see him regularly, seems to work with alot of "shy" and/or nocturnal fishies...

What are you feeding your catfish? I feed mine algae wafers that the pet store told me to use. And he doesnt come out for those until I cut the light usually

ive had my raphael for like 6 months and he never comes out ive only seen him once
