Is there any large catfish that can be kept with large cichlids without being able to eat cichlids? I know of common plecos and niger catfish. If not, any medium-sized catfish that can be kept with cichlids?

It depends on the large cichlid species. Possibly Lima Shovelnose, Megalodoras Uranoscopas, Megalodoras Irwini. There are more I can't think of at the moment.

What type of “large” cichlids are we talking about? 12” Veija? 30” temensis? 14” Midas?

There are a few vieja: a heterospila, an argentea, a melanurus, a breidohri and a bifas. A red devil or a midas(IDK). A pair of jaguar. A male motaguense. A green texas. Around these sizes. The 2 largest species of my cichlids are either a cichla monoculus or a male parachromis dovii. Currently I only have a raphael catfish with them(somehow bro survived for years). Also a lower-jawed bichir.

If you can find some already grown Pimelodus ornatus. They get to a foot in size. They are a lot more active than some catfish. Mine did a great job cleaning up after the Oscar it was with. All the food that flee out of her gills as she ate it gobbled it up.20180830_172218.jpg
They do spend some time in hiding. I would say about 50/50 hiding/resting, rest of the time out hunting food.20180905_091131.jpg
They can be solo, or in a group like pictus cats.
