I've been tossing market shrimp for catfish and anything else big enough to take it. I hooked into a real monster and had my hook tossed. I have no idea what I may have hooked. It was on the Minnesota River. Could have been a catfish, a big carp, big drum, etc. Has anyone tried fishing with shrimp? I've had one hookup in three days, and something chewed up my bait today, undoubtedly too small to hook.

market shrimp is great catfish bait let it sit in the sun all day before you go out i nail them every time i use that

Didn't think of making it stink, but I should have. Thanks for the advice.

LOL. Fresh is better, raw shrimp is very fragile much like sardine/mackerel. If you let it sit in the sun all day(depends how hot the sun is and how long you let it sit there), they will rot and stink real bad you don't even want to touch it. Not only that, it will turn soft.
As goes for the Minnesota River, can't say...I don't fish there. But a minimum size hook I would use for catfish are 4/0 and the maximum is 6/0 with 15-25lbs test. Raw shrimp will attract a lot of species, including Lake Sturgeons if there are any on the Minnesota River.

have you ever tried using chicken gizzards or chicken organs? put this in a bucket or plastic container and let it sit in the sun for a bit to get the smell strong. try fishing for the cats at dusk or a little after. you should do well with these methods

I use mainly market shrimp when I go fishing. It's a universal bait. It has worked well for me almost every time. That's what my uncle always used and it has stuck with me since I was a little kid.

I'm not sure what it is that I hooked. I have been told there are 80 ft deep pools in the area I was fishing. It ran upstream about 30 yards before sitting on the bottom. I am guessing it was holed up in a mess of wood, because I couldn't pull it out with 60 lb test spiderwire. I tend to lose patience and tried to pull it out. The hooked popped free. It was bent considerably. I'll look into the sturgeon thing, that was something I considered. This occurred at about 2 PM.

did it have much movement or fight? i've had turles catch the line and they tend to just go to the bottom pretty fast. one snapped my line once fairly quickly. it swam at an angle behind me and just went down. it was almost like tying a boulder to the line and dropping it in.

I use shrimp on allmost every outing. Whether it be to a river or a creek or a lake. I have found that soaking the shrimp in whiskey or another hard alcohol does perform better.
