when I lived down in southern missouri , I would see so many of those crossing the highway ussually 2-3 daily , saw quite few "remains" of some that didn't make it :( .

I had talked with the mayor about trieing to get funds to put in a tunnel system for them in certain area's that would let them go under the highway instead of over it , but it didn't work out......

Thanks so very much for caring about that sweet looking turtle! :D Can see why you might have wanted to keep her. Thank you also, for letting her go free!:D :headbang2

Indeed you found a female midland painted. She won't just lay anywhere, and being captured and relocated to somewhere she's not familiar with will hinder her willingness to lay eggs. Glad you released her.

Where do they prefer to lay eggs? Can't imagine she was someplace she was familiar with. Exiting my hay field and headed into a corn field.

Often they return to the same general area every year. So often if you see a old female turtle crossing a road in spring, there's a good chance she's crossed that same road, in the same place, dozens if not hundreds of times. In areas where they're abundant, they wander through fields, across roads, through yards, and across anything that's between them and that perfect spot. And this is just aquatics. Box turtles are known to lay within feet of the same spot every year.
