They're well distributed throughout Fla. now. They breed readily in the abundant floating plants in Fla waterways (bubblenest builders) and can survive in low O2/stagnant systems.

The river is very stagnant in a lot of areas, including the part I was fishing. The normal catch is usually gar or bofin.

Probably came from one of the tropical fish farm's, may possibly be more in the area you caught that one from, but I'm a little confused about how you caught the hoplo cat , never knew they would go for fish on a hook. I guess you learn something knew everyday lol

Haha thats awesome. Note to self- bring something to transport fish if I ever go to florida. Lol stock your tanks for free

When the high water recedes in our neck of the woods, all the puddles end up having brown hoplos, bigger ones have walking cats too. Hoplos are now widely spread in the central and southern FL.

I too am surprised he went for a minnow - usually they are a kind of a filter-feeder, like their cousins cories and both breath some air, allowing them to stay in low oxygen waters. 9" is a very good size though.
