I went shore fishing this morning at a local reservoir. The reservoir is full of Pike and other big fish. I was trying to catch pike but I kept catching catfish. Interestingly enough I've never caught a catfish in my entire life and just today I caught five! :D I assume its spawning season for them because the females were bloated full of eggs.

I got rained on so I left for home and passed by a small river along the way. I figured I'd stop and see how the fishing was. I caught a really small perch and two fish that I couldn't ID. The first was about 8" long. Its was very squishy unlike a perch or most other fish. It resembled a perch in body shape but the color was all wrong. It was a faded grey/black color on top and silvery down the sides, with a white belly. Very dull in color overall. It almost resembled a minnow but a lot larger.

The other fish was about 6" and perch like but more slender. It had a very small stubby dorsal fin. It was dark green and patternless on top and lighter green on the sides fading to white on the belly.

Can anyone ID these two fish?

Also. One of the 5 catfish I caught swallowed the hook so far that I couldn't even see it let alone remove it. Normally I would kill the fish in a situation like this but being that there spawning now (I think) I decided to cut the line as far down as I could and let it go. How will the fish fare? Can it live with a hook stuck in it? I feel bad now...:(

Here's the two locations I caught the fish...

upon doing some research I think one of them may have just been a common Shiner but I had no idea they grew that big.

Look into possibly white perch for the first one you describe. Most fish aren't soft except for some catfish, and like carp and stuff. Hopefully it wasn't a silver carp because that would be very bad. Pics would def help if you got any

In april i caught a spanish mackerel with a treble hook in the back of its throat i thinkll the catfish will be fine as long as you didnt try to get it out. You do more damage pulling out hooks like that then you do leaving in.

I took one look and even poked around with a pair of pliers but I couldn't even see the end of the hook where it attaches to the line, far to deep to remove.

better off then no point in yanking it's guts out

I cant see the pics of the fish so i cant comment on that but as far as leaving a hook in a fish, ive had to do it myself a few times where the hook was too far down the fish to remove without killing it so i just cut the line as far down as i could and released em.

If the fish dies then atleast its a free meal for bottom feeders but you would be suprised what fish can live thrue, i once saw a fish that looked like it had nearly been chopped in half by a prop but was healing up well and was pretty fat.

Cheers-

Dazz
