I'm wondering what could be the main cause of cloudy water? Is it lack of mechanical filtration, dirty filter media or other possible causes?

Once i did 2 x 70% water changes 2 days in a row (had a bit of a thing about crystal clear water) and my water got a bit cloudy after that for a couple of days.
I think i damaged my BB when i did to much water changes.

After stirring up the bottom my tank can stay cloudy for a day. Next day it's clear again.

It can also be bacterial bloom. At this moment I've got it with my new tank. I think it was because I put some leaves in it. Too much organic material can cause a bacterial bloom. It started three days ago, and it still is a bit cloudy. Its slowly getting clearer.

It can also be caused by fish like corydoras stirring up the sand a bit.

Does bacteria bloom happens because too much BB is destroyed?
I remember fixing the ceramic rings in my overhead filters (took all out & rearrange again to ease water flow), then did a 80% water change.. & next thing I know the water becomes cloudy.. Been 2 days now & still cloudy..
If it matters, my tank is bare bottom..
I might try cleaning my mech filters tomorrow & do water change again to see if it helps..

Hmmm with a Bare-bottom tank and messing with the filters and a 80% WC you may have jacked up the BB. Give it a week or so and then do smaller WC and see where you at that point.

+1

I had a bacteria bloom last week. Was lacking where it came to cleaning my gravel and my filters needed a good clean. We did a water change (about 50%) and then after a day we cleaned our filters COMPLETELY. Didn't mess with the bio beads but cleaned the sponges and wiped out the intake tubes, etc.

Water cleared up the same day! I think it was the gunk in the intake tubes and bottom of the filter.

I pulled out the mech filter & saw chunks of brown mushy substances underneath them.. when I stirred the mushy stuff, the water in the filter box became very dirty..
Is it ok to siphon them out?

Yes siphon that crap out. It'll just make your tank dirty. I'd suggest using tank water and shaking your mech sponges in the water. It sounds like your filter just needs a cleaning.

bacterial bloom, algae bloom, to much ammonia, tank not cycled, etc. WC help out a lot.
