I've found with every pleco I've kept over the years, that they hide for the first few months; then suddenly out of the blue, they'll pop out into the front of the tank, as if they've got tired of being hungry or have worked up the courage lol.
After that they are regular characters at feeding time. Exceptions would be if they were scared of being attacked by bigger fish, which in this case could be why
