How can you tell is a bichir is cb or wc? Pros and cons for each?

Thank you

Wc grows larger, slightly better patterns and coloration. cb grows smaller and has worse colors and patterns depending on how many generations seperate it from wild caught or f0.

I personaaly avoid buying CB bichirs because they are usually mass bred by the tens of thousands so they are alot "worse" quality than the WC bichirs. CB bichirs can have defects and they will have fainter and more sparse patterns which i truly despise.

+1 In places like asia they are mass bred and are just made to be sold not for quality. Some places do quality but there are way more places they just do it to sell.

"Places like Asia" a bit broad don't you think? We are in Asia here in Japan, yet we breed the best Bichirs in the world! Some are even nicer than WC.
Look no further than breeders such as Dory-K, GEF, Igarashi, Vent, Polyba just to name a few. I would rather own their CB over WC.

I personally don't like taking fish out if the wild unless its the only way to obtain them... I believe it's quite irresponsible to ask for specimens to be taken from wild populations when you can easily find one that is bred well. That being said, my cb endlicheri has a crooked back so choose carefully!

LOL....Just what I was thinking. Asia isn't a country. CB can mean higher quality. Another example is Discus. There is good and bad CB. I think that is true with any fish.

I didn't say they are all bad I even said that there are ones that breed for quality
like you said there are good breeders out there. I'm not saying that all CB are bad but in America we usually don't get the good CB

Well sometimes it can be very easy to see in certain cb and difficult in others, this pertains to what we typically see in the united sates.
Pros
Cheaper....usually you can find cb polypterus for far less then a wild caught
Avalability...cb are a lot easier to find at your lfs or through vendors..
Size....you will normally not get your cb to a very large size witch can be good for some who can not have a large tank..

Cons
Health..the general health of the fish can be a concern at any size and at any time.
We have seen perfectly healthy looking cb endilicheri go from healthy to bent over night,we believe its a nervous system issue..
Overall look..the overall look of a cb is just not the same as you will see in a wild caught fish. Color can be light and have a constant look of stress, patterns can be faded, dorsal fins can be twisted, short,or curved, longer gill flaps, eyes tend to look like a frogs and generally sit high and forward to the top of the head.
Size..typically you will not see that monster polypterus you are hoping to have with cb's
