Cb vs wc

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
+1! The real trick is to find a good breeder. Tough to do in the US, but not impossible. Then we can try to breed our own. It may take time, effort and space, but as I am finding out, in the end, raising from egg is pretty cool. Plus there is an added conservation benefit.

+1 to you sir,on your breeding project you have breed your ornate correct? Conservation on the other hand of these fish is something that is in the eye of the beholder. And can be a long and lengthly conversation/ debate all on its own lol

The senegalus are the most common captive breed. I'm not sure if any mokes have been captive bred yet (they probably have some where) but as far as lower jaws i'm pretty sure there are a couple. TBH i wouldn't interbreed any polys assuming you can get them to breed. Most polys that are CB are bred with artificial hormones so they breed more easily. Are you trying to breed them?

No, no plans on breeding them. Just wondered if it has been done. Right now im just building my collection, just picked up a moke today, hes getting dripped right now.

Well sometimes it can be very easy to see in certain cb and difficult in others, this pertains to what we typically see in the united sates.
Pros
Cheaper....usually you can find cb polypterus for far less then a wild caught
Avalability...cb are a lot easier to find at your lfs or through vendors..
Size....you will normally not get your cb to a very large size witch can be good for some who can not have a large tank..

Cons
Health..the general health of the fish can be a concern at any size and at any time.
We have seen perfectly healthy looking cb endilicheri go from healthy to bent over night,we believe its a nervous system issue..
Overall look..the overall look of a cb is just not the same as you will see in a wild caught fish. Color can be light and have a constant look of stress, patterns can be faded, dorsal fins can be twisted, short,or curved, longer gill flaps, eyes tend to look like a frogs and generally sit high and forward to the top of the head.
Size..typically you will not see that monster polypterus you are hoping to have with cb's

I had a bad experience with a CB Delhezi, some of you may remember my thread about it. If I were to buy another bichir though I would look for a WC for the exact reasons mike mentioned.
