Hey guys, got a piece of cedar I want to use as driftwood in my CA tank. I have 2 questions, first of all, is there an alternative to boiling to remove tannins? It's too large for me to boil. Secondly, has anyone else used cedar for driftwood? I know it can be harmful to rodents respiratory systems. Possibly when I remove the tannins it will remove the other harmful things? Thanks in advance!

I have always been told that their is a certain chemical in cedar/pine that is toxic to fish .

I really don't know how to make it safe, someone might be able to help ya out .

yeah dont use any type of aromatic wood in your aquarium there isnt really a way to make those types of wood safe, only use hard woods in tanks

Have Cedar in my tank over 2 years. No tannins at all and no probs.

to almost try it you would need a big rubber-maid tub an fill it with hot water an put your wood in an let it soak until it turns brown then just change water until it stops turning color an then you could try it.

i'm thinking about adding some driftwood pieces in my tank, don't want to buy the overpriced aquarium driftwood, I gather that any hardwood works? any other criteria for safe aqua-wood?

yeah pretty much any hardwood that has been eaten up much by bugs, just boil it, soak in vinegar solution for several hours, rinse and then let dry thoroughly in the sun and your good to go
