Ceja Rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think ceja and brachyura are both called apple rays actually. Exporters have all kinds of nick names . I think apple ray was obviously one if these rays first and because of their big size maybe over time their was some sort of mix up

My guess would be massive lol. The one mr .wade catches is still over 100 lbs easy . The larger one he reels in is 4-5 feet across. But they get even bigger. Theirs the possibility that the potamotrygon barychura is the biggest fresh water fish on earth. Most giants found in freshwater are often only their to breed or feed? Even in the Mekong river those rays apparently can venture into salt water. The potamotrygon lack the equipment to survive in both.

I wonder if theirs a salinity tolerance difference amoungst different species and subspecies of pota ray and para rays? I've experimented with salt water dips and rays . And adding lots of salt to the tanks. All my rays have handled it well with good results?

The barychura rays must migrate in winter months somewhere?
Argentina is close to Antarctica lol and the parana river flows pretty far south. I couldn't see rays being able to tolerate minus temperatures in winter months unless these bigger rays winter in deep pools where the water is a bit warmer?

I have wondered about temps. in the wild. We keep our rays in 78-82 deg. (give or take) but several here have brought up the fact that most rivers in SA are DEEP. Surely rays venture into and large ones may even prefer deeper water. Then you throw in the "winter" temps. and these rivers probably get fairly cold. Anyone ever experiment with temps . on rays?
I have to admit, I did one time (on accident) two winters ago. I read several times that people did their WC with cold water to help cut down cost. Well, I tried it. Did a 50% WC with cold water and didnt even think about it till I was finished and happened to glance at my stick on type thermometer. I almost choked! It didnt even register and it goes down to 64 deg! At the time I had 2 Motoro and 2 Retic pups. Thought for sure I just killed them. They didnt act a whole lot different other than slowing down a bit. I let the heater bring the tank back up to temp. Everyone acted normal through the whole ordeal. I dont recommend doing this and have never made the mistake again, just made me wonder what temp. swings they endure in the wild.Sorry this dosent have anything to do with Ceja rays or maybe it does?

I've ran my 1200 gallon for weeks with no heater and a cold water drip.the pump kept it around 72 and the rays had no problems
