Centerpiece fish for a planted 75?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a heavily planted 75 with 3 male EBA. I eliminated all the females because a breeding pair will dig out plants to make nest. Male EBA are fine with plants but not female. All female or a single female EBA will attempt to lay eggs and ruin plants. EBA are very peaceful and males only fight in the presence of female. They swim in the front during feeding time, and sometime disappear in the bush of plants as a planted scape seems to be roomy for more fish.

I'm gonna try to get males for this reason as well as the nicer colors.

Side note, how do you like having that chalceus in a 75? Do you feel like it has enough room and does alright as a solo specimen rather than a school? I considered a few of these as well.

Also, i don't know how to multi quote on my phone but Gourami Swami I've thought about angels and festivums. They might be a little more benign than the acara as long as they don't break off into pairs.

Sweet tank and fish.

Youre dead on with the females tearing up plants. Ive witnessed the males doing it too but not if there wasnt a female building a nest nearby.

The trouble is that it is difficult to sex EBA at young age, so I bought a group and sort out the females as soon as they pair up.

Chalceus is best kept solo or a group of 6 or more. There is not enough room for 6 in a 75, so I keep solo.

Ahh. That's smart. Thanks for the info!

Blue acara is a good fish but not plant safe ime. They will rip up leaves and drag the plants around the tank sometimes. They may be safe around grassier type plants but they are definitely leaf shredders.
My EBA cannot compete with my Italian val plant. He will rip it up, but it grows back very fast.
