So I have been curious about biotype aquariums. Particularly Central American cichlids as they are just my favorite. I have been trying to do some research and formulate a plan or two to start moving my tanks in that direction. My two interests are doing something along the lines of a crater Nicaraguan lake and then something with Mexican cichlids. I have been trying to look into platys, swordtails, mollies, etc, too to see what goes with what and if a constant supply of reproducing food would work in a biotype tank. So here's what I kind of know so far for species of one or the other options, or at least fish I am interested in from those areas.

Nicaraguan Crater Lake
- Convicts
- Midas
- jaguars
- loesellei
- black belts

Mexican Biotype
- Carpintis/Carpinte Cichlid (texas like escondido or vontehillo)
- Vieja Family
- Salvini
- platys or sword tails

Let me know if i am on the right track here, and what other advice, fish, or whatever you can add to this direction. Thanks a lot!

Just a heads-up for the salvini - they will kill and / or eat any livebearers, while most of the Vieja will pretty much let large adults be.

I had 6 platys with my Carpintis male and every night one would go missing.

Carpintis are opportunistic predators - they will kill and eat live food, but only when they have a good chance. :P Mine does the same. Never in front of me, but every night - every night - poof goes a poor lil' fishy. Sometimes I can hear the water splash, marking another hit... every night, every night... bwahahahahaha......

Viejas can be very aggressive to their own kind or similar looking. Some are more peaceful than others while the black belt and argentea are 2 of the most aggressive.

I have 3 aquariums right now. A 29 gallon that i plan to use for a grow out tank for cichlids and/or raise a community of platys, swordtails or mollies in. Then i have a 90 and a 125 gallon. I would say i do have a fancy for the viejas. Had an argentea and a black belt for a little while and enjoyed those. I also really love the amphilophus and parachromis families of fish. Adding a carpintis and salvini to the mix and those encompass my favorites that i would like to try and work around a biotype with.

Thanks for the feedback thus far. This is a great help.

When I had my argentea and black belt in my 125, I think i also had an oscar, 2 gt's, a salvini, and that might have been it. One day I left for work. All was fine. I came home from work later that day, the male GT was shredded of all his scales. Didn't make it through the night. I'm pretty sure it was the Black Belt. For the most part the 2 vieja got a long pretty well with each other and the others in the tank. I wouldn't mind getting them again. My wife really liked them, so that helps the cause.
