hey does anyone have these in their tank? and can these adapt to warmer waters, would they be ok in a tank with CA cichlids? thanks any advice would be appreciated and pics would be GREAT:popcorn:

I have an adult and two juvenile longears, kept at room temp. I have heard of others keeping them at tropical temps. Just be aware that their metabolisms ramp up with temperature, so they will be very aggressive and very hungry at higher temps. I don't know how the temps will affect their life span.

oh ok well aggressiveness wouldnt be an issue since they would be kept with semi-aggressive/aggressive cichlids but def owuldnt want to do it if the higher temps would affect their health, does anyone know about this? (totally not sure if i would get them at all its a maybe, just saw how pretty they were and wanted to ask if it would work in case i did decide to get one, or a pair)

If you do decide to get them- don't get a pair! They don't pair-bond like cichlids; instead, the male will harass the lone female constantly and stress her out. So, either get two or more females per male or a single-sex group.

oh ok thanks yeah didnt know that (as you can tell def need do more research before i get them lol) but if thats the case then i would most likely just get a lone male

I've got a couple green ear sunfish and a bluegill doing just fine at 80*F. They've been at that temp for almost 4 months, and are growing nice and big. They square off pretty evenly with my Friedrichsthalii and managuense of similar size.

ok awesome yeah i e-mailed zimmerman to see how much one would cost shipped so now waiting to see what he says :) my only cichlids that would get bigger than him really would be the oscar im getting and my red terror but the other 2 will max out at the same size as he would so i think i will give it a try if being in the warmer temps wont affect his health

Keep in mind that Zimmerman ships juveniles, usually less than an inch long, so have a growout tank prepared.

thanks and that wont be a problem im redoing my tank (getting rid of africans and going CA) so all fish will be juvies (have red terror fry in grow out tank right now so couldnt put him in there) but if less than an inch long then i could just put him in and wait till he grows a little before getting the other juvies (who will be like 2in or less) oh and what would be best to feed him as staple, i plan on supplementing al my fish's diets with blood worms, earthworms, crickets but for staple would the same pellet (hikari cichlid gold) im going to feed the cichlids be ok?
