Central/South American Cichlid ID?

Going to agree. Looks like a little baby Jaguar cichlid. Parachomis managuense. You were pretty close though for being new with them! Good job! They are particularly harder to identify when they are smaller (2.5", even 3" or less).

Determining sex is best done when they are a little larger as males and females continue to diverge in pattern as they grow.

As others mentioned this fish will get big (10"+, but often 14"+), just the heads up.

not all petsmarts, stock varies by area and demand in that area. though yes petsmart would def have jags before they had motas or freddies, i just thought i would warn against such blanket statements. the only time ive seen jags at a chain petstore here was when they had 2 baby jags unknowingly mixed in with the assorted african cichlids at petco, but never seen them at all at the petsmart
