Hello, I am wondering if there is any difference in brands of ceramic rings. I'm thinking fluval vs aquaneat or generic. Is there any difference in quality or performance or is it all basically the same stuff?

I have used different brands and not noticed a difference and believe it’s all the same stuff. Currently using lava rock.

I always throw ceramics away and replace with matrix.

Its all surface area really if you ask most people the difference is negligible, personally id save some coin and buy lava rock.

I should have said these will be used in a canister. Are you using lava rock in canisters? I do have some matrix too, just a small bag to try it out.

I matrix in both canister and ac110 in bio bags. you can by online buy the bucket,

Have bioballs and matrix in one canister. Have lava rock in a make shift plastic drawer with water running through it. Working good for now.

I got about 20lb of ceramic rings off eBay for dirt cheap, 5 years ago, and they've been running in my 3 tanks ever since.

So yeah, generic, no name brands works just fine.

Ok, thanks guys. So with the expensive name brand stuff your pretty much just paying for the name on the box. It's the eBay stuff I was looking at, 6 one pound bags of ceramic rings for $13 I think. Is there a generic option for matrix?
