Ceramic Ring Question......

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok,i guess i should of said I ALREADY KNOW I NEED MECHANICAL PRE-FILTRATION...........i just want to know if im wasting my time/money and if all that media would even be covered with LIVE bacteria, like half dying off before the other half populates.

My understanding is this... the bacteria will only populate the amount of media needed to handle the bioload. ;)

Will it spread out evenly amongst the biomedia? Not sure of this!

On one hand the bacteria will grow at the same rate on the media. So you would think that it would.

However the media that comes into contact with the most bioload(lower layers) would populate to the amount it sees.

I know,Chille-Releno,i''ve seen it.The AC 110 full of Ceramic i think will be a good sized colony for my parrot(non-true),Crenicichla Sveni,Crenicichla Sp.Xingu I,Hemichromis Bimaculatis,Heros Severus! Comments?Naysayers? Anybody think im wasting $ on all that ceramic?

On my 90 Gallon i have 2 AC 70's (300) and 1 AC 110 (500),i was wondering if i filled the 500 straight to the top with Ceramic Rings only(this would be alot of rings)This would offer unsurpassed numbers of Nitrobacter and so on.Is there a point where i have too much bio-filtration??? I kinda don't think so.Meanwhile, the 2 AC 70's will be for Mechanical and Chemical Filtration. Is this a good idea? I want some of the Mods opinions on this.
Thanks

you cant really have too much biofilteration but you can have more surface area than the number of bacteria that can colonize it. and thats a good thing. Its always good to have extra biomedia to be a flexible biofilter. I think you idea is a good one.

soooooo...... you want one with only mechanical media, and one with only chemical media?

did i get that right?

you could have one of each in each AC 70, that way you have the sponge keeping the carbon from clogging and you have the same amount of material just divided into two units.

I agree. It is the old would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I always oversize filtration. Run multi filters on each tank. Smaller fish grow up and you never know when that have too have fish will be found:)
