my opinion on bio media (that's separate from chemsitry terms, not connected) being alot of hype is just me. that is all i meant, yet now i am the flamer! i guess the previous 10 pages are normal internet talk...!

it just amazes me how something like this could really enrage so many. it is just a hobby people, so calm down! after all, a hobby is supposed to be a relaxing exercise!
Nobody is enraged..... You just chose to flame someone for using correct terminology and even then nobody was enraged... Maybe your reading too far into the conversation or down right misinterpreting it.

i'm not up on internet terminology, like lol or flaming, or those smiley things. when i say enraged, i think it ws probably taken out of the normal, everyday context into an internet context, if you follow me. so just chalk that up to soemone not using internet jargon correctly:).

peace.

No offense taken or meant Fwiffo. I think people can often read direct speach as angry speach. I consciously try to be blunt, direct or specific in my wording. For no other reason than to avoid confusion.

Though I can see how direct or blunt words can be misread as angry or enraged words.

Also, I agree some people tend to try to talk over the heads of others and act as if the ability to do so makes their perspectives more valid than others. Educating ourselves on the topic does make our perspectives more creditable, but just because someone strings together a few big words doesn't mean they know what they are talking about.

I personally feel we are best off when we use specific scientific terms that allow others to reference what we are saying... but generally word things in common enough terms so that your average Joe hobbyist can follow what we are talking about... though in this conversation we have touched on a few points that without a bit more knowledge than "average Joe hobbyist" has it's unlikely you will be able to follow closely...

Water params before and after a 50% WC

Prior to WC; ammonia, nitrite both at zero. Nitrates looks like 30-40ppm pH 6.9

After WC; ammonia looks to be just shy of .50ppm, nitrite zero, nitrate about 15ppm, pH 7.0

I'll test hourly until the ammonia is no longer detectable.

Well 3 hours later no detectable ammonia levels.

Next planned step will be Wednesday. I will remove the other xp3 and move as much of the 2.5 or so liters of media into the two AC110s.

What happened?

Just waiting for a the ammonia levels to clear to give a summary.

Which they have.

There had been no other detectable levels of ammonia since the spike that resulted from the water change. Levels were tested twice daily.

So I took the basket and a half of media(mix of Bio max, ehfisubstrat and matrix) out of the XP3 and placed it into four 12" x 4" mess media bags. Three bags are full and the fourth bag is 3/8ths full. Each bag is roughly 3/4 of a liter and I was able to place two in on of the ac110s. I had to move a bag of biomax originally in one ac110 to the other one(shape of the bags fit together better). So each AC110 is holding roughly 1.5 liters of media. The other full bag and partial bag have been hung in the tank for now.

I didn't see any rise in ammonia until about 4 hours after, it then peaked at .25ppm at 6 hours and had no detectable levels this morning at 14 hours. Ammonia levels are still at zero, 18 hour after.

My next move will be a 50% W/C tomorrow and I will also then remove the 3/8ths full media bag.

Well after 50% WC I had the same .5ppm ammonia levels as was with the last water change. Difference with this one was I took 8-9 hours for the tank to process the ammonia instead of the 3 hours as before.

No doubt the tank is still adjusting to the moving and removing of media. I also removed the 3/8ths full bag of media that was hanging in the tank. Next move will come next week after I do another WC and see how the tank processes the ammonia

Did you remove the second XP3?

In your previous post you mentioned removing the media and redistributing it, but didn't specifically mention removing the canister...

This might be a good time to add a powerhead and then on next weeks water change see how long it takes for the ammonia to drop back to zero...
