ceramic rings

Scrubbies seem like they would trap alot of detritus.
I use scrubbies for their actually intended purpose, dish washing, and I find I can never completely rinse all the trapped crud out (to my liking). I do realize food bits are not the same as aquarium waste, but I still feel that it just takes too much effort to thoroughly clean out.....particular for those of us with ocd

As for lava rock I have never used it personally but my thoughts where breaking it up into smaller pieces and using a mesh laundry bag or 2 smaller mesh bags to put them in. As for the comparison lava rock vs. ceramic I have no idea which has the advantage of surface area but I do know lava rock is way more porus.
I believe that the design of ceramic rings will allow for better water channeling/flow, but I suppose that's debatable. In regards to lava rocks being more porous, we don't just don't know, what percentage of that porosity is actually getting access to water to allow for bb colonization.

I do agree with you there it is unknown how much surface area is useful for bb.
