Chaetobranchus Flavescens

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's good to hear they're eating somthing. So you're going to be getting a few more, very cool. Could you post some pics when you get a change I'd really like to see them.

I'm going to try moving them to a bigger tank with better lighting. Once I do, I'll try to get some pictures. Right now they're pretty plain looking -- metallic silver with a red anal fin. The coolest part is watching them gape-and-suck when they're eating. I may have to take a video.

Awesome! I got some of these a couple of years ago from Oliver, totally AMAZING fish. They are difficult to get onto prepared foods, and can easily parish if you don't stay on top of things.

Mine ate cyclopeze, frozen mysis (Piscine Energetics brand), and black worms. Got them to take the smallest NLS pellets as well. Its was difficult though, and I did end up losing one of my four before I got them all eating.

Watch out for aggression, they don't have horribly strong mouths, but they will bash the snot out of each other and still try to grapple with their mouths.

They are definitely rewarding, and if you can get them to eat very very cool cichlids. I kept mine with Crenicichla lenticulata and Crenicichla acutirostris, as well as Hoplarchus psittacus and Petenia splendida. Point is they can be in a robust community set up, but you DEFINITELY need to make sure they get enough to eat.

Their fins get incredibly awesome!!! They blow heckeli and daemon out of the water. Even their caudal fin gets extentions throughout it. Its crazy! I LOVE IT!

Here are a few links to pictures of mine when I had them. Had mine for almost two years. . .

Second picture is one of my Chaetobranchus flavescens. . . the tail is SUPPOSED to look like that. Its crazy cool!

Chaetobranchus I

This one goes to show you that they can be aggressive, and can damage each other.

Chaetobranchus II

Anywho, you get the idea. :)

Thanks for all the great advice and info people.

Unfortunatly they won't be coming in with this import, and i'll have to wait untill next time :(

Still have lots to look forward to though.. a small teaser will be:

Amphilophus Calobrensis
Theraps Wesseli
Caquetaia Myersi

The list is a lot longer ;)

I lost one of them when I first got them within a week due to not eating. The other three lasted for well over a year. Then I moved and I lost two more of them. :( Sucked big time. The last one I kept for almost another year, then my stupid vulture cats regurgitated their food and fouled the water BAD, and I lost ALL my fish. Super pissed.

Mine grew about 2" while I had them, not horribly fast growers. Probably still weren't getting enough food even though I was trying to slam it down their throats.

I've seen pictures of some that are 12". . . .;) They get large and impressive.

I'm thinking more and more of doing a species tank to ensure they get enough food. Although I will say they've become much more aggressive about food since sharing a tank with my G. dicrozoster, so maybe it's encouraging them to take prepared foods better.

I'm uploading a video of them eating. I'll post in a bit.
