I say northern pike.
That is one fish it most def. not is, just look at it. small pike have bars and a black line under the eye, but at the size this fish is it would already have spots and an adult like pattern. That rules out pike, there are no native chain pickerel in MI so it must be a grass.

hmm I think you may be right. I should of looked at the pic better :nilly:

Its two fish, 1st & 3rd are the same fish, middle one is another one.

I sent the photos to the Michigan DNR a fue years ago, and they thought they might be Grass Pickerel. But they told me to keep fishing and send them a photo of a big one if I could get it. A 5 pounder can't be a Grass Pickerel is what he told me, so he must have had some dout too. Unfortunitly I no longer have acksess to the Bog, its on private property and the people I knew sold.

I know Chain Pickerel are not Native, but in the past people stocked fish willy-nilly all over Chain Pickerel included. My Grandfather caught a Chain Pickerel out of the Kankakee River in Indiana back in 1953, it was 7 lbs, 14 oz. So concievibly they could be in Michigan. But without ceatching a big one we will have to assume its a color variation of Grass Pickerel.
Before these, I've only seen Grass Pickerel that had bars, or were clear, never with chain like markings. I've caught tons of them in my life, mostly in Indiana, but at least 20 or so out of Great Bear Lake, MI which is only 10 miles from this bog. None looked anything like these two.

Grass Pickerel are hard to target, because they are uncommon in most lakes. But try the backwaters of lakes or rivers, that you know they are in. You can cast small lurers, or use live bait (minnow or nightcrawler).

You could also go to the NANFA sight under comercial venders, Brian Zemermen sells them in the spring, also try Sachs Systems Aquaculture - Paul Sachs also sells Grass Pickerel along with Redfin Pickerel & Chain Pickerel. When in stock.

How do I catch a pickerel that size for my tank? I have a 120 gal tank and I live in New England.

that is a chian pickeral i catch them all the time fishin in mass. to catch some for your tank that size ,u use a fairly large net with very small holes and scoop in the heavy grassy weedy shallow areas, of a pond or small stream. i use to put small grass and chain picks in my tank all the time when i was a kid.
