champsochromis caeruleus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The information that I was able to locate stated a length of approx. 15". A 125 or 180 would be your best bet at tank size. They are a "sand-dweller" and a mouth brooder. Also one source suggested a "low-fat" diet.

I got them from the lfs. The male has a lot more color than the picture shows. I just suck at taking pictures. Thanks though

I bred these fish several years ago in a 6'x2' tank with other malawis present. They are a very impressive and powerful fish when large, the males fins are beautiful. They are very fast swimmers, I would have prefered to have had them in an 8' tank to give them more room to stretch their fins ! They need (if I remember correctly) an area on the tank floor with enough room to court and breed, and plenty of swimming space for initial courtship. I can't remember if the male is overly aggressive with the female, but I seem to recall some chaos in the tank with the other residents. These fish have big mouths and will eat (and hunt) any fish they can fit in there. I recall feeding mine on standard malawi food (pellets and flake) plus frozen shrimp/mussel/fish. I haven't seen any available in my LFS for quite a few years, but I'd have them again, and would recommend them to anyone with a large enough tank to do them justice.

Hi Rob, Looks to me as though you have females, that is judging by their colour. The males are a beautiful blue colour. Needs to have sand as the male will want to construct his sand castle where he will lure the females to for spawning. How big is you tank? Something else about Malawi's is they prefer extremely clean water. I do water changes, around 20%, every 4-5 days and I have been extremely successful with my breeding of my mbuna's. Three recently acquired wild caughts have given me their second batch of fry. :naughty: :woot: :clap :headbang2

I was able to breed my trout in a 75. Male was full color at about 9 inches, female about 7 or 8. She was holding for about 2 weeks until my roommates threw a party at my house when i wasn't there and did not watch my tank. Some jackass dumped half my food in the tank and all my fish but a female livingstoni died. Bought 7 fry though from my friend who has been breeding them in his 320. He purchased a large group of fry about 2 years ago when he was at the ACA in Wisconsin. So time to grow these guys out and give them another try.
