Change of plans...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh man very sorry to see what happened :( i hope they'll all be fine! best of luck!

i don't know if you mentioned this or not, but where did you move the pacu to for now?

i would highly suggest doubling on the water changes...likely 2x per week for at least a couple weeks. this will help stave off infection as gar snout injuries are very prone to this, and once an infection takes hold there is generally little that can be done. other than that, some salt in the water and increasing temp (basic gar med treatment) would also be advised--

These precausions have already been put into effect as of last night. I was planning on treating it as i would any other fish related injury i have encountered (clean water, heat, salt, etc...). i guess at this point all that's left is to hope we can avoid an infection. Thanks for your input solomon.

demjor19 - Sorry to hear about your problem. I find this thread interesting because I have 2 large pacu with my 17" spotted gar and a variety of other tankmates. Can you give me some details about your pacu? How large? How often do you feed and how much do you feed? My gar and my pacu do not even interact let alone have any sort of conflict with each other. What size tank do/did you have all of them in?

Thanks

Like i said...mine were fine together for a year! Ours is 22-23 inches long and gets fed constantly. We never feed her live prey and rarely feed her frozen or fresh seafoods. She was always seperated by a divider during feedings (to avoid any competition for food). I dont think she was doing it out of aggression, rather than mistaking a snout for food one time and then realizing it was edible. From there she was doing it almost instinctively. All i can say is dont be surprised if/when it happens to your Gar. If at all possible, i would try getting a new setup for either the Gar or the Pacu. The two equal disaster together!

I can definitely see how once tried the pacu would develop a "taste" for gar snout :( You could almost see it being an accidental bite while feeding but since you divide them when feeding that isn't an issue.

Looking at the pics I'd be pretty concerned about the first one (the big one) but the others' injuries look like they should heal pretty well barring infection.

i think its time to eat the pacu

Sorry about your gars

i had to move a couple of months ago and i also had a problem with my ali gar.i made the mistake of thinking my 22" gar would be ok in a container for about a hour with a 5" female red terror. WRONG!!!!!!!why do terrors go for the eyes???????????i thought he was going to be blind but sofar he still has his eyesight but i looks like he has cateratics, cloudiness. i was pissed.i still am. GARS DONT MAKE GOOD TANKMATES!
