  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ouch!!! very sad to see such a thing happen to such beautiful fish
and after all the care and love given to them
hope they all make it
one things for sure, though i never kept pacus, no more pacus with gars

Great to hear!

WOW! I knew Pacu had a hard bite but holy smokes batman thats horrible looking! Do you have any pics of the healing process or at least what they look like now? I saw you used salt to aid in the healing process but would something like Melafix work as well for gars? hopeing E_americanus will chime in on this one as to if he has ever used it. Glad to hear their doing better tho.

Thanks everyone. Some of them do still have some noticeable damage, but they are all feeding and acting 100% normal. I'll try getting some pics of the healing process.

Thanks again,

No. Melafix is supposedly bad for gar. i have in the past used a few small doses on my Gars with no ill affects, but i'd rather play it safe than sorry. General rule for healing a gar is to add salt, turn up the heat, and do more frequent waterchanges.

Gotcha thanks for the info. I'm still in shock over the attack, I keep looking back at the pics. Its like a train wreck you cant stop looking at.

Tell me about it! 4 out of my 5 gar had snout injuries from the incident. The only reason my shortnose didnt get bitten was for the simple reason that it was in an isolated tank at the time.

Good to see all your gars recovered from this ordeal. Somehow I missed this thread when it was current.

Just goes to show, no matter how smart we think we are or how long the fish have been kept together, disaster can happen. Many fishkeepers here, myself included, push the limits on what fish we keep together. Maybe it's time for us to stepback and decide what's really best for the fish we keep.

Ive been re-evaluating some of my tank setups since this has happened. so far i have made a few small adjustments, but nothing too major yet. I agree though, people really do need to think long and hard about what they are keeping together.
