Changing from freshwater

I would get as much CURED live rock as you can afford, then add some lave rock or lace rock. Mix the rocks up good so all of the live rock is touching some of the lace/lava, and it will seed that rock into live rock. It takes a few weeks but once that coraline algae starts growing nobody will ever know. I used purple up and it seemed to help with growing the coraline algae.

Your lighting will be fine for FOWLR. If you could get a sump filter with a skimmer that would be great.

I checked out your tank build Canuck, AMAZING!! I think i will go with live sand and rock. I also have some rock hanging around from one of my other set ups, its holey rock i believe. Will this be ok to add aswell? Or leave out?

Live sand is a waste of money...you are just paying to have dead crap in your sand cycle your tank. You could put in anything...like the LR to cycle the tank. Nothing is alive in a bag of sand that has been sitting in a closed bag on a shelf for three months.
Finally someone who post the truth. You pay 50-100% more for a bag filled with a slurry of crap that doesnt work. :irked:

Just seed your tank with a few pieces of LR and feed the bacteria with some ammonia such as a rotting shrimp in a sock (sock is there so it is easy to remove when you need to).

Thank you good sir. Its sad...this is all it is, a dirty bag of mixed grade sand. For which you pay, like we have both stated, more money. No one on this website that recommends live sand has EVER told me why...still waiting on several threads to explain that to me. I think the canuck uses it because he likes the grade that it is...Im sure if you searched hard enough you could find something similar grade-wise elsewhere.

All the "SW" rock that you buy in petstores dry...is crap. It will take FOREVER for it to become colonized, and I just wouldnt mess with it. Same with the "holey" rock. I hate that stuff...save yourself the hassle, and just buy all base rock or whatever you can get cheap.

I've decided to get a new tank with a sump and keep my other tank as is, after looking around for a while and i think this is more functional aswell as looking better with everything hidden and not altering the space in the tank. The sump has 4 compartments and i was thinking of having one as a refugium alongside a skimmer etc. Which order is it best to place these in the sump? Sorry for all the questions guys but i would like to approach this with as much knowledge as possible.
