I've had my FX5 for 2 years now-it came only with the standard 6 foam pads. It never had the polishing pads or other to place in the basket.

I find its pretty crap in terms of mechanical filtratio-its on 100G. I've just ordered some replacement foam which is much finer to replace the 6 foam blocks. Its 30 PPI so should trap the finer particles better than at present.

Anyone else done a similar thing and care to share their experiences?

I just sold my FX5 instead lol.

I hear a lot of good results from using the 20 ppi foam I am yet to do so however. JGray is the man to ask here.

I stuff the top tray of my FX5 full of poly fill, and I run a magnum 350 with the micron cartridge so my mechanical is great, and if I need more I can pre load my mag350 with diatomaceous earth and bam, daitom filter.

I love my fx5. Cleared my heavily stocked tank in 3 days. I am looking towards getting the 20 foams though.

Well I replaced the basket foams last night with 30ppi foam-bought it from a German website. It was 3cms thick which seemed adequate.

I made them all taller than the original FX5 foam to attempt to minimise any bypass. I'll let you all know how it does and if its worth it or not ;)

I may get some of those 30ppi for mine, what are the standard foams?
Are the foams you got made for the fx5 or is it just a block of foam you have to cut to size and shape?
And i think the fx5 is ok but if i ever need another big canister i would pay the extra for an eheim.
