changing FX5 foam blocks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I forgot I had some 30ppi and 20ppi samples in my Fluval 304 inside the bottom basket.

THey are both about 1" thick. I will tell you this much, if the "junk" doesn't come out with bleach and water, I will be throwing the sponges away. Very hard to clean. I had them in for TOO long but on any note, if you can't clean them fully, they may not work.

I put some 20 ppi in my fluval 405 bottom basket and its not hard to clean but I use tap water though right out of the bathtub output (high pressure) For those cleaning with tank water I think it would be really difficult to get back to new that way. Either way the size of the foam in my fluval 405 bottom tray is a LOT smaller than the FX5's foam which I am yet to modify.

Haven't got round to cleaning them yet. JGRAY when I do I'll get some pics and let you use them for your website.

Regarding cleaning the sponges...is it advisable to use tapwater? Thought any BB growing on the foam will get nailed and create problems?

Meh I dont worry about the BB growing on my mechanical media. It works fine for me but others may offer different opinions. Either way at some point you have to replace mechanical media anyways :D And cleaning with tapwater (depending on the chlorine concentration and temperature and a million other parameters) Usually will not kill all the BB. This is all my opinion gained from success in doing so.

Quick update-did first clean yesterday after 3 months use. Easy to clean-had trapped loads of muck. Overall very pleased with performance & would recommend anyone with FX5 to replace the existing foam with finer ppi (20 or more)
